{"id":864,"date":"2016-11-02T10:53:40","date_gmt":"2016-11-02T10:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chief-exec.com\/?p=864"},"modified":"2017-01-06T16:24:19","modified_gmt":"2017-01-06T16:24:19","slug":"87bn-industry-walks-talent-tightrope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chief-exec.com\/?p=864","title":{"rendered":"\u00a387bn industry walks talent tightrope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Creative industries in the United Kingdom fear they will not be able to retain or attract talent and skilled workers from the European Union if freedom of movement across the EU ends post-Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The sector\u2019s \u201ccreative and commercial success\u201d \u2013 exports soared by 49 per cent between 2009 and 2014 \u2013 could be damaged, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativeindustriesfederation.com\/assets\/userfiles\/files\/Brexit%20Report%20web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">new report<\/a> presented to the secretary of state at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Karen Bradley late last week.<\/p>\n<p>The creative industries, which account for one in 11 jobs in the UK, is the fastest growing sector of the economy. It is worth \u00a387.4 billion GVA (gross value added) according to <em>Brexit Report: The impact of leaving the EU on the UK\u2019s creative industries<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Foreign-born talent doesn\u2019t deprive Brits of jobs, it makes British creative talent better and thus creates jobs<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Prepared by the Creative Industries Federation (CIF), and based on the contributions of almost 500 of its members, this report covers a wide spectrum of the industry including film, television, media companies, cultural institutions and software &amp; games. The UK creative sector employs a large number of EU citizens who represent between 10-40 per cent of the <a href=\"http:\/\/chief-exec.com\/?p=214\">creative industries sector<\/a>\u2019s workforce.<\/p>\n<p>These EU workers also help plug important skills gaps which, according to the report, stem from inadequate training compounded by an ever-greater need for talent in a growing sector &#8211; especially in highly specialised and technical fields such as animation, visual effects and video games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEuropean talent has supplemented our own in terms of supplying highly skilled talent to our creative companies\u201d, the CIF said.<\/p>\n<p>And the UK\u2019s competitive edge in the creative industries is a \u201cconsequence of being open and international\u201d John Kampfner, CIF\u2019s chief executive, noted.<\/p>\n<p>The European and UK Group chief executive of Havas, one of the largest international advertising and communications groups, Chris Hirst, said that \u201cthe UK is one of the world\u2019s leading centres of commercial creativity because it is a welcome home to the world\u2019s greatest creative talent, both the established and the new.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForeign-born talent doesn\u2019t deprive Brits of jobs, it makes British creative talent better and thus creates jobs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/grossdomesticproductgdp\/bulletins\/grossdomesticproductpreliminaryestimate\/julytosept2016\" target=\"_blank\">Office of National Statistics<\/a> (ONS), the sector has been a major source of growth in the three months to the end of September \u2013 as growth in the transport, storage and communications industries saw an increase of 2.2 per cent in the third quarter of 2016 &#8211; compared with 0.6 per cent in the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis growth was primarily driven by the motion picture, video and TV programme production, sound recording and music publishing activities, and computer programming industries,\u201d the ONS noted.<\/p>\n<p>The boom in UK TV production is being fuelled by projects such as the newly released series <em>The Crown<\/em>, filmed in London, Scotland and at Elstree Studios &#8211;
